Freedom Day: But Do You Have Financial Freedom?

Earlier this week, South Africa celebrated Freedom Day, marking 31 years since that historic moment when all citizens, regardless of race, could vote in our first democratic elections. That day in 1994 changed the course of our nation. As former President Nelson Mandela said, “Let freedom reign. The sun never set on so glorious a human achievement.”

But now, decades later, many South Africans are asking: What does freedom mean today?

Yes, we have political freedom but has that translated into economic freedom for all? And zooming in even further – on you and me – are we truly financially free?

What Does Financial Freedom Even Mean?

Let’s break it down. Financial freedom doesn’t mean being wealthy in a flashy, show-off kind of way. It means being able to live your life without constantly worrying about money – having enough to cover your needs, plan for your dreams, and respond to life’s curveballs.

It’s about peace of mind.

As Archbishop Desmond Tutu once said, “There is only one way to eat an elephant: a bite at a time.” Achieving financial freedom is exactly that – step by step, decision by decision.

So, ask yourself: Do you have financial freedom? Only you can answer that.

Where It All Begins

It starts small – very small. Remember when your mom or gran used to say, “Don’t chew more than you can swallow?” That was your first financial lesson, even if it didn’t feel like it at the time. Living within your means is the foundation of financial freedom.

From there, the journey expands to being able to:

  • Pay your bills and still sleep peacefully at night
  • Save for life’s important moments
  • Grow your wealth without always feeling like you’re chasing money
  • Provide for your loved ones, now and long into the future
  • Replace or repair the things you depend on
  • Borrow responsibly for big life steps
  • Bury loved ones with the dignity they deserve, without financial pressure

Helping You Own Your Financial Journey

At Magis, we live by the guiding principle: “Never run out of cash.” Our financial advice isn’t built around selling products – it’s built around you and what you want to achieve.

Whether your dream is to send your kids to university, start a side hustle, buy your first home, or simply breathe easier every month, we’re here to help you get there.

We’ve created guided financial journeys – especially around being prepared for unexpected loss (like replacing valuables or handling funeral costs) – but we’re building even more. And we want your input. What does your version of financial freedom look like? What do you want your money to help you do or become?
